Pure Sine Wave Inverters

A pure sine wave inverter produces a smooth waveform effectively identical to mains power, which means anything that runs at home runs off it – fridges, laptops, CPAP machines, power tools, chargers. A modified sine inverter produces a stepped approximation that is cheaper but causes motors to run hot, transformers to hum, and some medical and sensitive electronic equipment to refuse to work at all.

Every inverter we stock is pure sine wave. We don’t sell modified sine, because the saving isn’t worth the risk to your gear.

All six models are Projecta Pro-Wave, designed to AS/NZS 4763 with AS/NZS approved sockets. Each ships with a wiring kit – battery lugs and cable sized to the model – and all but the PW600 include an LCD remote control.

Pure Sine Wave Inverters Buying Guide

Size for surge, not average draw. Anything with a motor or compressor draws three to seven times its running wattage at startup. A fridge that runs at 150W can pull 1,000W for a second. Every Pro-Wave model lists two surge ratings — 120% for several minutes, and 200% for around a second. The one-second figure is what starts a compressor.

Check your battery can supply the current. A 2,100W inverter draws roughly 199A from a 12V battery at full load. Projecta publishes a minimum battery size for each model, from 35Ah on the PW500 up to 110Ah on the PW2100. If your battery is smaller than that figure, you’ve picked the wrong model.

Consider 24V if you’re building from scratch. The PW2100-24 delivers the same 2,100W as the 12V version while drawing about half the current — 99A against 199A. Less voltage drop, less heat, and a smaller minimum battery.

Know where the legal line sits. Plugging appliances directly into a portable inverter is fine. Hard-wiring one to feed fixed socket outlets in a caravan or motorhome creates a connectable installation under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 — that’s prescribed electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician.

PURE SINE WAVE INVERTERS FAQS

Which inverter size do I need?
Add the continuous wattage of everything running at once, then check the one-second surge rating covers your largest startup load on top. For lights, a laptop and charging, 500W is enough. For a fridge alongside other loads, start at 1,100W. For a kettle or air conditioner, 2,100W.

Is a pure sine wave inverter worth the extra cost?
If you’re running anything with a motor, a compressor, a transformer or a microprocessor — yes. Modified sine causes those to draw more current, run hotter and fail early. For a bare filament lamp or a kettle element, it makes no difference.

Do I need an electrician to install an inverter in NZ?
Not if you plug appliances directly into it. Yes, if it feeds fixed socket outlets in a caravan or motorhome — that’s prescribed electrical work under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010.

What cable size does my inverter need?
Each Pro-Wave ships with a wiring kit sized to the model — 8mm² on the PW500 up to 35mm² on the PW2100. Don’t substitute thinner cable: at full load these draw between 47A and 199A.
